Description: The course presents a survey of the constitutional, statutory, and common law principles common to all public education systems within the United States with an emphasis on current issues in education law. Further, the course examines the role that law plays in shaping education in the United States, including the interrelationship of law and education policy, the influence of the courts on school governance, and the interplay of federal, state, and local controls over the education system. Topics covered may include compulsory education, private education, and home schooling; school governance, school funding, and alternative models; problems of access to educational opportunity; and First Amendment rights of students and teachers.
