Description: | This course will explore the legal, moral, and practical issues applicable to the art market and museums, including claims for restitution of art raised by original owners, indigenous populations and source nations to collectors, museums and importing nations, particularly art displaced or stolen during historical wrongs, colonialism and wars. Issues of special significance include statutes of limitation, customs, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, the 1970 UNESCO Convention, the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, the 1998 Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art and museum ethics codes. It complements Art Law, which emphasizes issues facing contemporary artists and collectors. |
