Professor Kinsley Teaches Advocacy by Example

Professor Jennifer Kinsley

Chase students who want to know what a lawyer’s professional responsibility to provide zealous advocacy for a client means need only look to the pro bono work of Professor Jennifer Kinsley in seeking clemency for a woman who was entangled in human trafficking as a minor. She has argued the case before the Ohio Supreme Court (the court upheld the conviction), filed a petition for clemency with the Ohio Parole Board (the outgoing governor did not grant it), and now plans to renew her efforts with the inauguration of a new governor.

The case is similar to one in Tennessee that drew national attention recently when the governor there granted clemency to a woman who had been convicted in a murder that occurred while she was in the sex trade as a minor. Professor Kinsley’s pro bono work in the Ohio case was the subject of a recent report on The Appeal website.
