Chase Student Helping on Legal Issues after Tornado

Myla Cardona-Jones

Myla Cardona-Jones saw her summer externship with Greater Dayton (Ohio) Volunteer Lawyers Project go from routine to “disastrous” after a tornado hit the Dayton area in late May. Since then, she has been helping victims deal with legal issues that have arisen from the storm.

Her externship was supposed to have focused on drafting legal documents and shadowing lawyers to experience how they work in various situations. Instead, she has organized a clinic on how to replace legal documents lost in the storm and done legal research on laws related to natural disasters. She has particularly focused on laws covering consumer rights and price-gouging.

“Chase has prepared me for this opportunity by teaching me how to think quickly and effectively,” she says. “All of the decisions made during this process have been very nuanced and sophisticated, so having those experiences in the classroom when you’re called to dissect a case definitely prepared me to provide solutions while considering the pros and cons of each decision.”
