Competition Teams

Moot Court

The Chase College of Law offers an active moot court program. Participation is voluntary and available to those students with a demonstrated ability and interest in moot court. The program provides an opportunity for students to develop various legal skills including research, brief writing and presentation of oral arguments. The Moot Court Board conducts an intramural competition annually and selects students to compete in various competitions throughout the country.

The Moot Court Board is made up of students who demonstrate exceptional promise in the field of appellate advocacy and seek to improve their writing and oral advocacy skills.

  1. The Bettman Competition is held at the end of the Spring Semester.
  2. Additionally, the Grosse Competition is held at the beginning of the Fall Semester. Grosse is a voluntary competition open only to those who have successfully completed Advanced Appellate Advocacy and both first-year writing and research classes.

Success in these competitions, based on a combination of brief and oral argument scores, provides an opportunity to receive an invitation to join the Moot Court Board.

The National Trial Advocacy Team

The National Trial Advocacy Team promotes excellence in trial advocacy through training, education and mock trial competitions. Eligible students are selected through an intra-school mock trial competition during the fall semester. The national team competes in a state mock trial competition during the fall semester and a national mock trial competition during the spring semester. While preparing for competition, team members have the opportunity to develop trial advocacy techniques in a one-on-one setting with expert practitioners.
