Profile

Professor Rick Bales is the Director of the Chase Center for Excellence in Advocacy, and teaches Civil Procedure, Labor Law, Employment Law, Employment Discrimination, and ADR in the Workplace. In 2010, Professor Bales received the Frank Sinton Milburn (the outstanding University-wide professor) Award. He spent July 2010 on a Fulbright to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he conducted a mediation training workshop for Malaysian judges and trial lawyers.

Professor Bales has published more than eighty scholarly articles, including many co-authored with Chase students. He has authored or co-authored five books, on employment arbitration, alternative dispute resolution in the workplace, employment law, labor law, and arbitration law. He has spoken widely on topics pertaining to innovative ways of teaching employment and labor law courses.

Before coming to Chase, Professor Bales taught for a semester at the University of Montana Law School, for a year and a half at Southern Methodist University Law School in Dallas, and as an adjunct instructor at the University of Houston Law School. Prior to that, he litigated employment cases for the Houston-based law firm of Baker & Botts and the Cleveland-based law firm of Baker & Hostetler. He received his law degree from Cornell Law School in 1993.
