Learning Government Law at Chase

Teaching and Training Why study government law? Here is what some lawyers who practice it for a living say.

"You practice municipal law because you love the variety, the challenge, and the feeling you are making a difference."

"I feel like I am on the inside of what is happening in my city, so I have a meaningful opportunity to use my knowledge and abilities to help solve problems in my community and to make my city government more responsive."

"At the end of the day I leave work feeling satisfied because I know I represented my client to the very best of my ability while still being as fair as I can to those on the other side, because those on the other side are the citizens of the city I represent."

Those lawyers, of course, perform important roles in the formal processes of government. Lawyers in and out of government, as leaders in their communities, shape the processes of government in less formal ways, too. Studying the law of government prepares future lawyers to serve in either capacity. Further, regardless of the nature of their practices, lawyers deal frequently with government. Familiarity with the structures and processes of government is often important to a lawyer's effective representation of a client.
