Student Opportunities
Internships
The Local Government Law Center Internship Program gives students the opportunity to assist the center's work of support to local
governments while earning academic credit. Interns might research and draft answers to legal questions posed by local
government officials and their attorneys. Students might also work on various projects in progress at the center,
such as developing and drafting model ordinances for cities and counties. In addition, interns can research and
write short legal articles for inclusion in the center's newsletter or develop longer pieces for the center's
research and technical information publications.
Externships
The
Local Government Law Center Externship Program enables a student to work with an attorney supervisor in a
state or local government agency. Externs earn academic credit while gaining practical legal experience.
Placements expose students to a variety of subjects including powers and duties of local government, state
and local legislation, civil rights, public sector employment, planning and zoning, environment, and
business regulation. Externs can work on problems across a range of substantive areas among them
contract law, administrative law, criminal law, tax law, and constitutional law. During the
school year, students typically work in settings in northern and central Kentucky; during the summer,
students can work in more remote settings.
Recent placements include: Office of the Governor, Office of the Attorney General, General Assembly, Department for Local Government, and the offices of city attorneys, county attorneys, commonwealth attorneys, and public defenders.
