Strategies

Check the Career Development Office Job Postings regularly for part-time, summer and full-time positions. Job postings for both students and graduates are updated daily and can be accessed via hard copy and on the Chase student website. Also check your NKU e-mail account frequently for announcements concerning on-campus interviews, and special programs and opportunities.

Stop in to the Career Development Office periodically (beginning with your first year in law school) to discuss your plans and interests, and get advice concerning your specific job search.

Many legal jobs are not advertised. However, by utilizing research, networking and informational interviews, you can often discover a job that is ideal for you. Research potential employers by using the Career Development Resource Room and the Career Development Collection in the Law Library, as well as Martindale-Hubbell, Lexis, Westlaw, specific employer websites and bar association directories.

Expand your network of contacts to include friends, Chase alumni, Chase faculty members, fellow students, lawyers and others who may help you find a legal job. Networking is a very useful skill to develop. Many students and graduates report obtaining their jobs through networking.

Informational Interviews are designed to help you tailor your interests and job search and to build contacts. By setting up a short meeting with an attorney who practices in an area of interest, you can find out what the job/area is like, gain another contact and perhaps obtain a lead on another one, all without asking specifically for a job. Chase alumni are very happy to assist our students with informational interviews and we encourage students to utilize this worthwhile opportunity. To set up an informational interview, either call the person with whom you wish to speak or send a short letter of introduction. Mention why you are contacting them and how/why you were referred to them.
