Symplicity – Did You Get Your Welcome Message?
All Chase students should have received an email from Chase Symplicity, our new web-based comprehensive career services management system. The email should have gone to your nku email account. If you did not receive the welcome message, please contact Lisa Moore at moorel1@nku.edu. The welcome message provides instructions on how to access Symplicity as well as your user name and password for your first log on. As mentioned in previous emails, you will need to provide some requested information in order to activate your account to access job postings and other career development information. Some information is already provided for you, and it should only take you a few minutes to provide the remaining information.
Appalachian Research & Defense Fund Internships Available
The Appalachian Research & Defense Fund of Ky is seeking legal interns for the Summer of 2012 in its 10 offices which serve low income clients in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and the south central farming counties of the Kentucky Appalachian area in traditional areas of poverty law representation, including housing, consumer matters, claims for public benefits and domestic relations. These positions are unfunded, but interested students can apply for funding through the Chase Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program (see next paragraph for more information about the Fellowship Program). Interested students should see Lisa Moore in the Career Development Office for more information about applying for the intern position.
Helpful New Webinar on Public Interest Careers
The National Association for Law Placement has released a webinar entitled Destination Public Interest: Landing the Ideal Public Interest Job at http://www.nalp.org/destination_public_interest. The webinar is designed for 3Ls and recent graduates who are pursuing public interest careers. It offers concrete best practices and tips in the areas of cover letter and résumé drafting, as well as interviewing and professional networking. Special thanks to NALP members Jennifer Thomas and Jarrod Shirk for their contributions, and to Equal Justice Works and Charlene Gomes for their collaboration in producing the webinar.

Attention Class of 2012: The Guide to State Judicial Clerkships
Chase subscribes to this online handbook that provides an annually updated state-by-state breakdown of how/when to apply for state judicial clerkships. It is an excellent resource for students interested in applying for state judicial clerkship positions (which begin after graduation). The application process will continue through the early part of the Fall semester, but graduating students should be submitting applications as soon as possible. Networking Opportunity on February 17– Eastside Lawyer Group
The Eastside Lawyer Group has invited Chase students to attend its upcoming CLE event for attorneys entitled “Consumer Bankruptcy Basics”. The program will be presented by Mark Godbey, Esq. and Brian Flick, Esq. and will include discussion on the current climate, issues in Chapter 7 filings and issues in Chapter 13 filings. The program will take place on Friday, February 17 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Hyde Park Country Club, 3740 Erie Avenue, Cincinnati. A Networking Lunch will immediately follow the CLE from 1:00–1:30 pm. The Group has discounted the registration fee for students; the student cost for the program and lunch is $10. Dining Etiquette Programs
Terri Thompson of Etiquette in Action and Terri Thompson Presents will be coming to Chase to present two dining etiquette programs for students on February 21 (12-1:00 and 5:15-6:15). Terri is a certified etiquette consultant and dynamic speaker who has been to Chase in the past to give programs on business etiquette. These hands-on dining sessions are the perfect way to refresh and update your dining skills. Dining, whether the business lunch or the power dinner, is a vital part of our business culture and a blunder can literally cost you a job, client or colleague. These sessions are structured to increase self-confidence, while having fun, as Terri walks you through every aspect of the meal. You will learn all about dining manners, complex place settings, toasting and tipping, and come away with a confidence that you can handle any dining situation.

CBA “Flying Solo” Seminar about opening a solo law practice – Feb. 24, 2012
Thinking about opening your own solo or small law practice, but not sure if it is right for you? The CBA is presenting a half-day workshop featuring experienced practitioners who know first-hand the challenges and rewards of running a solo or small practice, and benefit from their insights and advice before deciding if hanging a shingle is right for you. The event takes place on February 24 from 8:00-12:30 pm at the Cincinnati Bar Association office, and is followed by a networking lunch. Topics include Before You Begin, Building a Foundation, Getting the Phone to Ring, Paying the Bills and Running a Law Office. Participants will also receive a copy of: Jay Foonberg’s How to Start & Build a Law Practice, 5th edition (a $70 value) and John J. Mueller’s Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (a $15 value). Opportunity to Apply for Stipend for Summer 2012 Government or Legislative Policy Internship in Washington DC
Through a donation funded by Duke Energy, Chase is able to provide funding for a 1L, 2L or 3LPT student who is offered an unpaid, full time summer internship to assist with government or legislative policy work in Washington DC. The stipend amount will be in the range of $2,000 to $4,000. In order to apply within Chase for the stipend, interested students must submit (1) a resume and (2) statement of interest to Lisa Moore in the Career Development Office no later than March 19. Your statement of interest should be 400-500 words, explaining your career goals, what unpaid summer placement opportunity in Washington DC that you have been offered, a description of the work you will be doing over the summer, and how this opportunity will advance your educational and career goals and allow you to give back to your community in the future. Students applying must be in good academic standing. After student application materials are submitted to Chase, a committee will form to review applications and make a selection.
• Note: Students who apply to participate in the Legal Studies Institute in Washington DC would receive preference in consideration due to the cost involved with participating in LSI. New Education Vouchers for Students with Unpaid Summer Public Interest Internships
The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps program is an AmeriCorps-funded program that will provide law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,175 education award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. Summer Corps members provide critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities. Applications must be submitted online at http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/law-school/summercorps some time between March 1-March 23. If you are planning to do an unpaid internship at a public interest organization, or applying through Chase for a Chase Summer Public Interest Fellowship stipend, then you are highly encouraged to apply for this voucher. Numerous Chase students have received it in previous years.
