Paige L. Ellerman, '99
Aug 07, 2008 - Paige L. Ellerman, an associate in the Litigation Department at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, will serve as Chair of the Cincinnati Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section (YLS). The YLS is open to every member of the Cincinnati Bar Association who is under age 36 or in his/ her first five years of practice, regardless of age. Programs and services are geared toward the professional and personal development of new/young lawyers. Paige is a 1999 NKU Chase graduate. Additionally, Ellerman serves as the president of the Board of Governors of Salmon P. Chase College of Law Alumni Association and as the National Administrative District Director for the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity for Women, Inc. She is past president of The Yearlings, Inc. and for the past three years she has been selected by Cincinnati Magazine as a Super Lawyers Rising Star and as a 2006 Ohio Rising Star by Law & Politics and Cincinnati Magazine. She is also a member of the firm's Professional Women's Resource Group.

Aug 04, 2008 - Dinsmore & Shohl LLP has awarded Charles Shane Crase with the Alice Neeley Memorial Award for 2008. Mr. Crase graduated from NKU Chase magna cum laude in 2004. He is finishing his fourth year as an Associate in the Labor & Employment Department in Dinsmore & Shohl's Cincinnati office. He represents employers in issues related to the workplace.
The Alice Neeley Memorial Award was established to recognize outstanding associates who are dedicated to the practice of law, relate well to clients, have a positive attitude even in adverse situations, and make a genuine effort to personally know others in the firm. The Award has been given annually over the past five years to the most outstanding associate as voted by their peers.

Jul 22, 2008 - NKU Chase Professor Kenneth Katkin appeared this past week on WVXU's Impact Cincinnati program. Professor Katkin joined University of Cincinnati law professor Ronna Schneider and News Director Maryanne Zeleznik to discuss free speech and political activity in the workplace. As we get closer to this year's general election, more and more people will be voicing their opinions and showing support for their favorite candidates and issues. But should they be putting their political views on display at the office?

Dan Tobergte addresses Chase students
Jul 22, 2008 - The Chase Center for Excellence in Advocacy recently hosted guest speaker Dan Tobergte, president and CEO of the Tri-County Economic Development Corporation (Tri-ED). Mr. Tobergte is a 1988 graduate of Chase and routinely lectures on advocating for a client's economic development needs in Northern Kentucky.
Dan's July 16 presentation addressed Chase law students doing externships and focused on the legal aspects of economic development in Northern Kentucky, and how lawyers work with a community in its economic development efforts.
Tri-ED is a nonprofit corporation created to promote Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties as a location for manufacturing, professional office, and technology-oriented projects. The corporation also assists local companies in their expansion efforts and aids local communities in developing resources and infrastructure to support economic growth and development.

Professors Sharlene Lassiter Boltz
Jul 22, 2008 - NKU Chase Professor Sharlene Lassiter Boltz was recently recognized by the NAACP as one of the top '100 African-Americans of influence' in the Cincinnati area. Professor Lassiter's contributions in the field of education were highlighted, most notably as the first African-American faculty member and administrator (in her prior capacity as an Associate Dean) at NKU Chase College of Law. Sharlene has been teaching at Chase for 17 years, focusing on commercial law, contracts, and domestic-violence law.

SWEL students listen to Prof. Barbara McFarland
Jul 17, 2008 - Over twenty students visited the NKU Chase College of Law this week as part of the 20th annual Summer Work Experience in Law program. The program was initiated by the Black Lawyer's Association of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Bar Association Round Table and provides African American high school and college students who are interested in law careers with paid summer internships in the legal field. In addition to gaining real-world legal experience through the internships, students visit tri-state area law schools to learn more about the admissions process and the attainment of a legal education. Chase Director of Admissions Ashley Gray spoke to this year's SWEL students about the admissions process and Professor Barbara McFarland showed students how to prepare for a successful law school experience during their undergrad years by taking suitable classes and honing specific writing and study skills.

Joseph Nava
Jul 16, 2008 - NKU Chase student Joseph Nava was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Historical Society by its membership for a three-year term.
Before going into business, Nava had 25 years of leadership development experience for the federal government. In 1989, he founded N7 Consulting Services, LLC, a business consulting firm offering translation/interpreting and other services, including immigration processing assistance, marketing to Hispanic and diversity training in working with Hispanics.
In 2004, Nava founded Unity Staff, LLC, a temporary employment agency, and three years later he founded Unity Import Export, LLC, which specializes in import/export contracts for South America. He is currently forming Unity Prime Construction Inc. a prime general contracting firm.
The Ohio Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves as the state's partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio's history, archaeology and natural history.

Amanda Jerrells Mullins and Public Advocate Ernie Lewis
Jul 08, 2008 - NKU Chase graduate Amanda Jerrells Mullins was honored with the In re Gault Award during the 36th Annual Public Defender Conference and Awards Banquet on June 16, 2008. Amanda is a public defender in the Maysville Trial Office who stands out among other colleagues for her skill and advocacy in making the criminal justice system fair and humane for Kentucky's youth and children. The In re Gault Award is given each year to an exemplary juvenile attorney within the DPA the previous year. During 2007-08, Amanda zealously represented the interests of children and youth in Bracken, Fleming, Lewis & Mason Counties, all highly challenging courts. Her skill and advocacy in the courtroom is noteworthy. She reminds us all that neither the Fourteenth Amendment nor the Bill of Rights are for adults only.

Philip J. Schworer, '86
Jul 08, 2008 - 1986 NKU Chase graduate Philip J. Schworer penned an article in appreciation of Chase's part-time evening program for the July 2008 Cincinnati Bar Association Report. In the article, Schworer especially praised his former professor and former Chase dean, Jack Grosse. Mr. Schworer recognized Professor Grosse's many contributions to the law school, including his contribution to the historical reference, "The Lawyers' School: A Centennial History of Salmon P. Chase College of Law." Philips also highlighted Chase's affordability, the clinical externship program, and Chase's impressive graduate employment statistics.
Philip Schworer, 2008-09 CBA president, serves in the Environmental Department at Frost Brown Todd, where he represents business and industry in all aspects of environmental, health and safety, and toxic tort issues. He is also a certified Professional Environmental Auditor.
